MUSIC GENRE - INDIE

The word "indie" originated from the word "independent" and started in the United States and the United Kingdom in the 1980's. It is used to describe bands who are independent of any major record label, especially the "Big Four" (Universal, Sony, Warner and EMI). Instead, indie artists have a do-it-yourself approach and publish their own music or are signed to smaller labels. The term indie can also be used to describe a genre, for example indie rock and indie pop. As a genre term, "indie" may also include music that is not independently produced as well as artists who do not fall into a single genre, these are called "alternatives".

The average target audience of indie artists are teens and people in their young twenties, roughly 15 to 25 years old and is aimed towards both genres. This is most likely due to the fact that people within this age range are most likely to attend concerts and festivals. They also get to watch the bands grow and progressive with them from the start.

The iconography within indie music consists of casual, plain outfits yet also unique to emphasise their individuality. The use of the casual outfits highly how relaxed the genre of music are as the most common outfits are plain tees and jeans. In addition, the outfits worn are mainly darker colours. However, some artists are more outgoing and wear more patterned outfits to show off their unique and individual fashion sense. This will relate to the target audience as they will aspire to dress and act like them, especially due to it being quite simple.
